Virginia Beach, Va. (April 3, 2009) — Despite an injured right arm, David Green, a Natural Resources major at Central Oregon Community College in Bend, Ore. became the Western regional champion in the 2009 STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Collegiate Series presented by Carhartt, the premier lumberjack sports event that airs on ESPNU.
At the Redwood Acres Fairgrounds in Eureka, Calif., top collegiate lumberjacks from nine regional schools went head-to-head in four STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® professional disciplines, vying for a slice of the Western title. Green, overcoming a painful arm injury, bested defending Western champion Adrian Flygt from Colorado State University by a mere two points and Brian Rupp from the University of Idaho by four points as the competition ended Friday afternoon, March 20. Green will represent the Western region in the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Championship in Columbus, Ga. June 19-21.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to represent Central Oregon and the other Western schools in the STIHLTIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Championship,” said David Green. “Since last year, I've trained for this really hard. Though my arm was badly hurting, I was determined to finish the competition. I put my heart into it and it worked."
Rivalries from college football extended into this event with schools from the Pac-10 (University of California at Berkeley and Oregon State) and Mountain West (Colorado State) competing. But you didn’t have to be Division-I to have a shot at this title with regional community colleges; Flathead Valley and Central Oregon also competed. The first two female competitors of the 2009 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Series season also participated, Stephanie Brana from the University of Nevada-Reno and Melissa Chun from the University of California-Berkley.
The Collegiate Series includes five events and runs from the fall of 2008 to the summer of 2009. The Collegiate Series travels to schools around the country to challenge amateur lumberjacks in head-to-head competitions to determine the best all-around collegiate lumberjack.
|
The collegiate lumberjacks compete in four disciplines: the single buck, stock saw, underhand chop, and the standing block chop, a first-time event for the collegiate series, using professional rules and equipment. They are awarded points based on their finish in each event, and the individual with the best all-around score advances to the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Series Championship.
“We’re honored to bring our competition to the Western region because of the enthusiasm and support for lumberjack sports,” said Roger Phelps, promotional communications manager for STIHL Inc. “Between the collegiate forestry teams and the local fans, we had an energetic crowd cheering on the skilled competitors.”
Green earned a $1,000 scholarship from STIHL for his school as well as a place in the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Championship to be held June 2009 in Columbus, Ga. He will join Adam LaSalle, from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, who won the Midwestern qualifier; Brad Sears, from the University of Arkansas-Monticello, who won the Southern qualifier; and two others, yet to be determined.
The winner of the Collegiate Championship event earns a spot in the 2010 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Professional Series presented by Carhartt.
