(Atlanta, GA) -- Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Student Career Days will be held at North Metro Technical College in Acworth, Georgia March 28-30. Sponsoring nine different events, STIHL Inc. is again the Platinum sponsor, making a cash contribution of $40,000 to the event. STIHL has been the top level sponsor for eight consecutive years

"We are very excited about sponsoring Student Career Days,” said Roger Phelps, the promotional communications manager for STIHL Inc.  “The talent, intelligence, dedication and enthusiasm displayed by the over 800 students from more than 60 collegiate programs around the country is proof that the future of the green industry is extremely bright.”

Informally known as the "Landscape Olympics," the three-day event gives college students interested in arboriculture, horticulture, and landscape design an opportunity to test their competitive skills against their peers while pursuing their career aspirations.  Also integrated into the events of the day are certain aspects of sales and marketing, in order to help prepare college seniors for a job upon graduation.

On Saturday, March 29, students will represent their schools in vying for the 2008 championship title and a $5,000 award from STIHL.  The following day’s closing ceremony will feature the presentation of the award check to the winning team, as well as the announcement of all scholarship winners.

Sponsoring nine different events, STIHL’s main competitive event is Wood Construction, a timed competition where students must build an item out of wood based on the plans provided the morning of the competition.  All of the items produced will be donated to the local area on behalf of PLANET.

Not only investing in the futures of college students presently majoring in the green industry, STIHL is passionate about increasing awareness in the minds of high school students that have interest in arboriculture, horticulture, and landscape design but may lack the knowledge of professional career opportunities this industry has to offer.  The National FFA Organization (FFA) Nursery and Landscape Career Development Event (NLCDE) has been sponsored by STIHL for three years. The top three teams from the FFA’s competition will be attending the PLANET Student Career Days, participating in the seminars and in three competitive exhibition events.

STIHL will also be bringing back one of the event’s most popular attractions, the STIHL Lumberjacks. The wood chopping entertainers will perform hour-long interactive shows that incorporate logrolling, tree climbing, sawing and chopping events.  These entertainment type shows are not part of the PLANET competition and will take place Saturday at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.
