Virginia Beach, Va. (July 2, 2009) The 2009 STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series presented by Carhartt honored this year’s top competitors who chopped, sawed, climbed and raced past their opponents to win titles in their respective disciplines at the second round and finals and Collegiate Championship in Columbus, Ga. June 19-21. The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series, created and owned by STIHL Inc., is considered the premier lumberjack sports event and is broadcast on ESPN2; the Collegiate Series airs on ESPNU.

2009 STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Professional Series Champion, Jason Wynyard of New Zealand

2009 The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS®
Professional Series Champion,
Jason Wynyard of New Zealand

New Zealander Jason Wynyard earned top honors as the 2009 The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Professional Series champion, a title that has passed between Wynyard and fellow New Zealander David Bolstad for more than 10 years. Wynyard secured the title by a mere point, breaking Bolstad’s two-year winning streak. Despite his second place finish, Bolstad won the Carhartt Chopping Award by

With this year’s win, Wynyard now boasts eight championship titles in the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series. In addition, Wynyard earned the right to represent New Zealand in the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® World Championships to be held in Brienz, Switzerland Sept.12-13. Also earning their way to the World Championships were Bradley Delosa of Australia and Arden Cogar, Jr. of the United States. Cogar, an attorney by trade, has lumberjacking in his bloodline. Both his father and grandfather were loggers by profession, and he is now mentoring his young cousin, Matt Cogar, who also competed this year.

“The Series is really about ordinary people doing extraordinary things in what really is the original extreme sport,” said Roger Phelps, promotional communications manager for STIHL Inc. This was one of the most competitive seasons in our 24-year history.”

The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Collegiate Championship, as well as the professional boom run and speed climb finals were also held in. The Collegiate Championship closely paralleled the pro series with Adam LaSalle of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point taking the title by a mere point over Community College’s Matt Slinglerland. LaSalle, a native of Williamstown NY, earned the championship title, which secures him a place in the 2010 STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Professional Series.

Alyse Schroeder of Hayward, Wis. won her first ever STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series women’s boom run title. She defeated 2005 title-holder Shana Martin with an 11.76 second time. In the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series speed climb finals, Derek Knutson, also of Hayward, Wis. hit the mat in 11.56 seconds, beating Brian Bartow's time of 11.72 second and Cassidy Scheer’s 13.03 seconds.

The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series second and final rounds and Collegiate Championship took place at the Aflac Outdoor Games in Columbus, Ga. June 19-21. Sixteen competitors competed in the six chopping and sawing disciplines Friday and Saturday with only eight making it to the final round Sunday, June 21. The six collegiate competitors went head-to-head in four professional disciplines, single buck, standing block chop, stock saw and underhand chop. The boom runners and speed climbers competed in a bracket-elimination format to determine the U.S. champion.
