The New Jersey Tree Climbing Championship was a great event.
It was similar to years past where you arrive to the site to see
volunteers working like bees in a frenzy to prepare for what would
be a huge success. I spotted some very familiar faces immediately.
One thing I love about competition is seeing the great competitors
return each year to test themselves, share, and also teach others
how it should be done. This year was no different in that regard.
The real enjoyment for me came from all angles. First, I was able
to preserve my title as 16-time NJTCC Champion. Second, was the
fact that for the first time ever, one of my climbers that I
trained, Seth Cook, was in my rotational group. Since he is a fun
person to be around, it helped me to stay positive. I also was
able to share some strategy with him before each event. A true
feeling of accomplishment came when one of my other trainees,
Rory MacInnis, was crowned runner-up. He is a young
climber that I have been working with for about 5 years now,
and he has improved consistently each year. Maybe he will be
the next NJ Champ!
We finished the day with the ritual prize giveaways and a family-style
BBQ. That is one of the best times for all who attend, since it is
so relaxed and completely social. It always reminds us of how tight
of a community the Arborists truly are. I can't wait until the
next one!
